STATEMENT BY CHANCELLOR DENNIS M. WALCOTT, CSA PRESIDENT ERNEST LOGAN, AND UFT PRESIDENT MICHAEL MULGREW

“We are pleased that the City, the CSA and the UFT reached an agreement on making up school days lost as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Teachers, principals, and the school community made an extraordinary effort to get our schools back online after the storm, and by working together, we were able to open most schools with minimal disruption. It is just as important that we recover the time lost, and this agreement will provide students with additional class instruction. In order to make-up the days students lost and to retain our eligibility for state funding, the last three days of winter break (February 20-22) will become full school days, and the June 4th clerical half day will also become a full day of class instruction.”

HURRICANE SANDY - DO YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER?
Here are some resources on how to help.

Gifted & Talented

New York City Department of Education Gifted and Talented programs provide challenging instruction to children with exceptional academic capacity.  In G&T programs, students are grouped together in a class with similar students and receive appropriate instruction in all content areas.  The DOE's recommendation is for teachers assigned to
G&T programs to differentiate instruction, provide appropriate enrichment opportunities, compact the curriculum, and/or accelerate the content.

Arly Castellanos, 7th grade student at MS 256 enjoyed The Lost Hero, by Rick Riordan

In The Lost Hero, the new novel by Rick Riordan, Jason winds up on a bus mysteriously, having absolutely no memories.  He meets his supposed friend who says he has known him forever.  Keep in mind, he is on a school trip.  Now all this happens in the first few pages.  Already, it is interesting and compelling.  You know, I should say, "I recommend this book because..." but no thanks.  I'll say this instead.  Seriously, just read the book.  Especially if you like Greek mythology or Percy Jackson.  Just read it.

Charlene Skinner, 7th grade student at MS 256 enjoyed November Blues by Sharon M. Draper

November Blues is like a movie.  Every time you read it, you will imagine a lot of pictures in your head.  When I was reading it, I thought I was there.  I think everyone should read this book because you will be talking about it for days.  That is how good this book is!

Destiny Hernandez, 7th grade student at MS 256 enjoyed The Ghost at Dawn"s House, by Ann M. Martin

I like my book, The Ghost at Dawn's House, because it is about how this girl named Dawn keeps on hearing creepy noises coming from her bedroom wall.  So she has an idea to taker her friends to her house and search for a secret passage.  Finally, after she doesn't find one with her friends she finds one in her wall.  A few days later she reads a book about Stonybrook and this guy named Jared Mullray, and she thinks his ghost is haunting the passage!  It might be because he didn't want to move when he lived there.

Victoria Meghan Negron, 7th grade student at MS 256 enjoyed The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson

I like this book because it is very twisty and it keeps you thinking.  You think you have one thing figured out and, boom, the thing you least think happens.  Who would have guessed that Dr. Jekyll wrote Mr. Hyde's letter.  I think you should try it, you might like it.
